In 1999, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) decided to emit a rule which contained the minimum requirements that a methodology had to accomplish in order to define itself as RCM.

With regard to the various methodologies who called themselves RCM from 1990, and as a result from the international demand for a rule which establish a minimum criteria for a process of analysis of failures to be called “RCM”, SAE JA 1011 rule bloomed in 1999 and in 2002, SAE JA 1012. As set out in the introduction of both rules, they don’t try to be a manual or a guide of procedures but they try to establish a minimum requirements that a methodology has to accomplish in order to be called RCM. Both rules can be found on the website
